New Wyly Theatre in Dallas, Rethinking Theater?

rem_koolhas

We hope Dallas Ft Worth is excited, if not elated, about the new Rem Koolhaas Dee and Charles Wyly Theater set to be completed sometime in the near future. Once construction is completed, Dallas will be the ONLY city in the world that has four buildings designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects located in one contiguous block. This alone warrants a visit to the city. The theater will be part of a cultural complex that completes the Arts District and will be home to the Dallas Theater Center.

And by the way, for DTC, if anyone is counting, that is one theater from Frank Lloyd Wright and one from Mr. Koolhaas. Not a bad record for Dallas Theater Center.

“The 11-story and one-sublevel building will feature an unprecedented “stacked,” vertically organized design that completely rethinks the traditional form of theater. In a typical theater setting, non-performance support spaces such as rehearsal rooms, staff offices, costume/makeup rooms and other areas wrap around the stage house. Such ancillary spaces in the Charles and Dee Wyly Theatre will instead be located either above or below the auditorium, enabling maximum interaction and flexibility. The interchangeable structural components of the building will allow for multiple outside pedestrian views into the interior of the facility, as well as different interior audience views of outside surrounding areas.” — DTC Website & Arcspace

One glance at the rendering below looks as if the building will be swimming or suspended in space prepared for some sort of launch. So cheers, to the launch of a vibrant Arts District. Exciting arrival.
