Many of today’s greatest magicians site turn-of-the-century magic legend Harry Houdini as a huge influence on their work.  But Daniel Bauer takes Houdini inspiration a step further than most.  The NYC-based illusionist believes he has actually been chosen by the spirit of Harry Houdini to carry on his legacy as his modern-day successor.

While honing his skills as a magician as a young adult, Bauer began to notice similarities between Houdini’s life and his own.  He initially brushed them off as coincidences, but says he later began to feel Houdini’s presence while meditating.  He eventually became convinced that the long-dead magician had a mission for him– one that Bauer decided to dedicate his professional life to fulfilling.

Whether Bauer’s claim is genuine or simply a gimmick, his performances definitely call Houdini to mind.  Following a six-year hiatus attributed to “the demons and horrors of an incurable illness,” Bauer makes his comeback with “Purity” at the Duplex Cabaret Theatre.  The show features acts of illusion, expert escape artistry and Bauer’s signature mind-reading.  He says he prides himself on shows that are free of “smoke and mirrors” and “paid plants” hidden in the audience; his only props are the everyday items that he invites the audience to bring.

“This is the legacy I vowed to Houdini and his family,” says Bauer.
