Once the headquarters for jazz legends like Coltrane and Count Basie, NYC’s Birdland seems like the last place that would let a YouTube sensation showcase her shenanigans. But ‘Miranda Sings!‘ is just that, and she’s preparing to make her highly-anticipated return to the jazz landmark, having performed there several times in the past year to rave reviews.
Comedian Miranda Sings (real name: Colleen Ballinger) launched to internet fame in spring of ‘09 with her hilarious YouTube videos, in which she portrayed a tone-deaf and egotistical aspiring star. The recent college grad’s overdrawn red lipstick and furrow-y eyebrows became trademarks, along with her quirky pronunciation and awful dancing. Many believed to be videos to be “real” attempts at singing, and commented that Miranda had no talent, to which she’d reply “haters back off!” or “haters make me famous”– clearly true, as her channel views are more than 5,000,000 to date.
So what is the creator of a viral video doing at Birdland? Well, aside from being secretly musically talented, Ballinger’s comedic genius has earned her a surprisingly strong following in the Broadway community. In the past year, she’s performed sold-out shows at top cabaret venues around the world, and even released her own EP of Christmas songs in December. After performing at Jim Caruso’s Cast Party, Miranda became a Birdland hit, and was invited back to the venue several times in 2009.
Now, Miranda Sings! makes her triumphant return for her first NYC show of 2010: a one night-only appearance for the Broadway at Birdland series, February 21 at Birldand.
