What was once a Public School 122 of East Village NYC, in 1979 was one-step-from-being-a-ruin abandoned four stories building to be found by a group of early artists and to be turned into rental rehearsal space at first and one of the most important houses of contemporary dance in NYC soon after. Choreographer Charles Moulton began holding rehearsals and workshops in the second floor cafeteria, and invited fellow performers Charles Dennis, Tim Miller and Peter Rose to collaborate in the administration and use of the space. Throughout it’s 30 years of existence (you may get closer to the origins and evolution of Performance Space 122 watching the documentary film Homecoming by Charles Dennis). PS 122 has given a home to several hundreds of projects not only staging them but also filming the new dance and performance scene.
PS 122’s offerings are both artistically and socially bold. It’s enough to say that the likes of LeeSaar, Sibyl Kempson’s Crime or Emergency, Lisa D’Amour’s Terrible Things and Katie Pearl or Temporary Distortion group are performing in the former “gym” of the former Public School 122.
We wish them another 130 years of fruitful and meaningful activity on the NYC dance/performance scene.
